A. Pengertian Hortatory Exposition

Sebelum membahas tujuan, ciri-ciri dan contoh hortatory exposition, mari kita pahami dulu definisi atau pengertiannya. Para ahli bahasa Inggris mendefinisikan hortatory exposition sebagai:

Hortatory Exposition is a type of English text that influences its readers to do something or act in certain way.

Jadi yang dimaksud dengan hortatory exposition adalah jenis teks bahasa Inggris yang berisi argumentasi tentang sesuatu dengan harapan pembaca terpengaruh untuk melakukan sesuatu dengan cara tertentu.

B. Tujuan Hortatory Exposition

Tujuan komunikatif Hortatory Exposition adalah untuk mempengaruhi atau membujuk pembaca atau pendengar bahwa sesuatu yang menjadi fokus pembicaraan seharus atau tidak seharusnya terjadi sehingga pembaca terpengaruh untuk melakukan atau tidak melakukan sesuatu tersebut.

C. Generic Structure Hortatory Exposition

1. Thesis
   Pemaparan tentang keprihatinan sebuah masalah yang sedang terjadi di sekitar kita.
2. Argument
   Pada bagian ini penulis akan berusaha menyampaikan beberapa argumentasi atau alasan yang tujuannya tidak lain adalah agar pembaca terpengaruh dan meyakini yang seharusnya itu bagaimana.
3. Recommendation
   Bagian terakhir dari generic structure hortatory exposition adalah pernyataan apa yang seharusnya atau tidak seharusnya terjadi atau dilakukan, yang biasa disebut saran (rekomendasi).

D. Ciri-ciri Redaksi Hortatory Exposition

• Fokusnya pada manusia dan non-manusia yang generik.
• Penggunaan kata-kata penyesalan pada argument, biasanya menggunakan kata should atau should not.
• Menggunakan simple present tense.

C. Contoh teks hortatory text

 Contoh 1: Never Try Smoking

1. A lot of people, especially teenagers, who do not smoke, always want to try smoking. They know it is bad for them and all, but it is just something they want to try. So they ask one of their smoker friends for a cigarette. Admittedly, they firstly can not light it on their own so they ask his friend to do it. Then they inhale that cigarette and smoke occasionally.
2. Apparently that makes them the born smokers. Now they do smoke fairly regularly. They can not avoid smoking and they enjoy too. They have smoker friends. Everyday they bring a pack in their pocket. For them, a pack of cigarette is as important as a wallet for their money.
3. Suddenly, for certain reason, they realize the fact that tobacco is the cause of a long list of nasty diseases. It is not only heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung disease but also bladder, lung, and pancreatic cancer. Even it was reported that around 400,000 Americans died each year. It was one every 80 seconds from tobacco-related illnesses.
4. Then they decide it is stupid to harm selves. They want to quit smoking. Unfortunately, they find that quitting smoking is so difficult. “Why can’t I stop smoking? I really want to stop it”. It is hard to quit because nicotine is powerfully addictive. Cigarette is one of the most efficient drug-delivery devices ever devised. As result, when people try to quit smoking, they often experience classic nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, headache, depression, and restlessness.
5. Well, still want to try smoke? Think the facts before trying! If you are not smoker, you should never and never try to smoke.

Penjelasan:

• Paragraf 1 dan 2 adalah Thesis, menerangkan keprihatinan penulis terhadap adanya “gejala atau fakta” sebagian orang (fokus pada manusia) terutama anak remaja yang merokok.
• Paragraf 3 dan 4 adalah Argument, menerangkan argumentasinya tentang bahaya merokok bagi kesehatan.
• Paragraf terakhir adalah Recomendation, memberikan rekomendasi atau saran kepada pembaca yang belum merokok agar jangan sekali-kali mencoba.

 

Corruption

 

Thesis
Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money and corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States. It’s just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims Jakarta as the most corrupt place in Indonesia.

Argument 1 

The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs who want to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe the officials.
Argument 2  

Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing the corruptors is still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generations from getting a bad mentality caused by corruption.
  Recommendation 

I believe we should start at the earliest stages in school and I think everyone should be involved in the effort to eradicate corruption. We must not make any distinction.

 

 

Children and Using Computer

Stating Thesis
Computer and internet are useful as well as powerful. To protect children, information on the safe usage of computer and Internet should be owned by each family.

Arguments 1
Computer connected to internet is powerful way to socialize with others. It can not only be good but also bad t. Recently we hear a lot of children get the advantage of social networking sites but we often see the news about the disadvantage of it for children.

Arguments 2
The role of parent in assisting and directing children in using computer is very necessary. Installation of software monitor such as key logger which has function to watch and note all activities relating to keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect children from potential harms. Children tend to hide what they have done in front of the computer to their parent. They see that all of they have done are their privacy and no one may know.

Arguments 3
We can not prevent children from using computer because it is multifunctional. However, many parents worry about what their kids do in front of the computer; whether they are doing homework or even just playing games. Or spending all time to surf internet which is the materials do not fit with his age. There is a tendency, especially teenagers, want to become acquainted with many strangers out side.

Recommendation
The lack parental supervision of children’s activities is likely to pose a potential danger to them. So parental monitor against the use of computers should be done from time to time. Below is what parent can do:
Setting reasonable rules for computer use by your children
Getting to know the ISP which children use

                                                           Monitoring Kids While Watching TV
 
Television becomes one of the most important devices which takes place in almost houses. It can unite all members of the family as well as separate them. However, is it important to know what your kids are watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely “Yes” and that should be done by all parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect the children from, especially violence, pornography, consumerism and so on.

Recently, a study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or at bedtime often cause bed-time disruption, stress, and short sleep duration.

Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time spent for watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of being aggressive.
Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and being inactive and overweight.

Considering some facts mentioning above, protect your children with the following tips:
1. Limit television viewing to one-two hours each day
2. Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their own bedrooms
3. Review the rating of TV shows which your children watch
4. Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening in the show
